Split rail · Toledo & Southeast Michigan

Split rail. Open and inviting.

Split rail is for a visible, open boundary with a rustic wood appearance. Choose the rail pattern, actual lumber and entrances first; wire backing is a separate enclosure decision rather than an automatic feature of the style.

Before you choose

How this fits your yard

privacy
Open rails leave the landscape visible.
upkeep
Wood care depends on species, treatment and chosen finish.
access
Plan entrances with the correct end and gate-post arrangement.
grade
Check how rails meet at grade changes; wire backing needs its own bottom detail.

Visible mesh and gate details help compare styles; they do not guarantee containment for a particular animal.

Make the layout your own

Plan the lawn edge as well as the fence line

An open rail fence becomes part of the landscape. Show how you want to use the ground beside it.

Leave the maintenance route visible

Mark planting beds, tree trunks and the route used to mow or carry garden equipment. If wire backing is included, discuss the ground-level detail and how you will reach the grass along it. A wide view of the lawn helps explain that routine.

Draw the driveway turn

Show where vehicles or equipment approach an entrance and how they turn after passing through it. Include both gate leaves in the sketch if you want a double gate, along with the space they occupy when open. The gate’s location matters alongside its width.

Make a more informed choice

Split rail: the details that matter

Split rail names the style, not one species

Manufacturers offer pressure-treated pine split rail as well as other wood systems in the market. Confirm the actual lumber and treatment instead of assuming every rustic rail is cedar.

Two rails and three rails remain open designs

Rail count changes the visual rhythm and the size of the open spaces. Adding a rail does not turn the fence into a privacy screen or automatically make it suitable for a particular animal.

Posts have different jobs

Line, end and corner posts are distinct parts of common split-rail systems. Map turns and entrances before the material list is prepared, especially where a short run ends at a path or driveway.

Wire backing has its own specification

If the fence will enclose a pet area, state the mesh opening, attachment, ground detail and gate gaps separately. The rails create the look; the complete backing and opening design determine what can pass through.

Ground-contact exposure matters at wood posts

For preserved-wood systems, match post treatment to the application. AWPA separates general ground contact from above-ground exposure, so an appropriate rail specification does not by itself settle the post specification.

Bring these questions to your estimate

  1. Which wood species and treatment are specified for posts and rails?
  2. Which rail count creates the boundary appearance I want?
  3. Where does the line turn or stop for a driveway or path?
  4. If wire is included, how are its bottom edge and every gate opening handled?

A ballpark is a planning range. The final quote depends on measurements, gates, removal, site conditions and the written installation scope.

Good questions. Clearer answers.

Can split-rail posts and rails be different materials?

A system can use separately specified components. Ask exactly what is proposed and whether the pieces belong together. The rustic appearance alone does not identify the species, treatment or compatibility of each component.

Why is a corner important when pricing split rail?

A corner can require a different post and a change in rail direction. Showing corners, ends and openings on the layout gives a more complete scope than quoting total boundary length by itself.

Will adding wire make split rail a guaranteed dog fence?

No single layout is guaranteed for every dog. The mesh, attachment, gates and bottom gaps must suit the animal, and climbing or digging behavior still matters. Describe the dog's behavior before choosing the backing detail.

Material guidance & planning references

These references explain material behavior and planning considerations. Product examples do not identify the brand in our photos or promise a particular specification. Your proposal and applicable local requirements determine the project details.
