Place the house, street right-of-way and proposed gates on your sketch before choosing where privacy fencing should start. For a corner property, show both streets and ask the township to identify the clear-vision area. Include private utility lines in the installation discussion; the township notes that an 811 request does not mark every privately owned line.

Monroe County, Michigan · LOCAL FENCE PLANNING
Confirm your fence permit and inspection requirements with the township Building Department before installation. Ash publishes a zoning ordinance amended through March 2026 and asks property owners to verify later changes. Its Building Department says application forms were updated in June 2026.
Section 21.13 limits residential side and rear fences to 6 feet. In front of the house or within the required minimum front yard, whichever extends farther, the limit is 3 feet. Front-yard fencing must be decorative and must not materially obstruct vision; chain link does not qualify as that decorative fencing. Keep fences out of public rights-of-way and clear-vision zones, and preserve driveway visibility. More restrictive private deed restrictions still apply.
This is a suggested preparation list; the local office determines the required application documents.
